Want to Be an Entrepreneur? Work for a Big Company First

Summary:

I'm an entrepreneur and I must say that starting and running a business would have been much harder without the skill and experience I gained in a corporate environment.

Would I want to work there today?  No.  But am I glad I once worked there?  Absolutely.

If you hope to someday start your own business, here are great reasons to work for a big company first:

  1. Entrepreneurs are sometimes crazy — and not in a good way. For every passionate and visionary entrepreneur who identifies an unmet need and taps the latent skills and expertise of otherwise-underutilized employees to create a thriving business that values people as much as profits… there are hundreds of small businesses run by people who are, well, nuts.  Sure, many startups are run by solid businesspeople, but I’ve met way more entrepreneurs who use their business to serve their self-indulgent, narcissistic, “me first” needs.

Your website is failing because...

Summary:

Hello everybody!

I have been learning so many things about website development and how to make it 'work.'  There are few things more disappointing for a business than a website that fails to deliver results.  Visitors may come to the site, but the site fails to convert visitors into clients and customers. There are dozens of reasons why a business website fails to deliver, but we’ve found there are three key factors that come up again and again.

1) ...Your website does not build trust.

Customer Service Is Not a Marketing Strategy

Summary:

Lacking the courage or creativity to come up with something unique, a lot of businesses claim they offer “great customer service” as a point of differentiation. Well, it’s not.

How many times have you seen some variation of the following statements on the side of a truck or on the logo-bearing trinkets businesses give away:

“We put our customers first.”

“It’s our service that makes us special.”

“Where customers come first.”

“Specializing in great customer service.”

Effective Project Management

Summary:

So you need to manage a project for your small business. How do you get started? What steps do you do next? How do you maximize your chances for success? The project management steps below guide you through the process of managing any project, step by step.

  1. Define the Scope
The first, and most important, step in any project is defining the scope of the project. What is it you are supposed to accomplish by managing this project? What is the project objective? Equally important is defining what is not included in the scope of your project. If you don't get enough definition from your boss, clarify the scope yourself and send it back upstairs for confirmation.
  2. Determine Available Resources

How To Sustain a Social Movement After Initial Success

Summary:
The Egyptians’ effective use of Facebook has given life to a slew of hopeful pages and groups throughout the region. This makes sense: Facebook, if combined with the right message, the right environment and the right people can indeed help to spark massive crowds. New technologies make it easier to get more information out to more people, more quickly. The result? Town squares and plazas teeming with protesters. Two ousted dictators and two more on the brink. Unfortunately, the quicker you mobilize, the less time there is to plan. The less the need for a traditional organization, the bigger the vacuum left after an initial big success. Whether it’s a huge protest, a victorious election, an ousted dictator or a momentous piece of breaking news, it’s more important than ever for movement builders and members to prepare for day two.

Build on Success

While it’s essential to reach goals, it’s even more important to build on that success and regroup. Act fast, capitalizing on increasing visibility and heightened awareness to get more resources for your campaign. Solicit strategic advice from outsiders with more experience and bring in new members and volunteers. If you need funding, now is the time to get it.

Website Maintenance: What does it take to manage your website?

Summary:
Every action has a beginning phase where you launch your activity, a middle period in which you must sustain and develop it and a conclusion. Many people set up a website enthusiastically but then they find that they don’t have the skills or knowledge to maintain and develop it. So, what are the challenges in this middle phase of a website’s life and how can you meet them?

Updating the site: The beauty of a website is that it is not static like a brochure or printed document. You can change it to reflect new products or new developments in your enterprise. You can launch new campaigns, and at any time you can add more content.

Social Media Marketing Strategies for Small Businesses

Summary:

Social media marketing is a hot topic for most small businesses. Who can't love the idea of being able to trive lots of traffic from social media sites directly to your small business - and for little or no money!

It seems too good to be true - and of course it is to a certain extent.  Steve, my brother-in-law, was recently at an online marketing event and all of the marketers said that they would not recommend social media as the marketing mechanism of choice to their small business clients - yet.

Don't Become A Statistic

Summary:
My five mistakes to avoid for startups.

Statistics around startup failures are widely known by entrepreneurs as well as those thinking about starting their own businesses.  In fact, only 44% of new business startups can expect to still be doing business just four years after inception.  To those not sturdy of heart, numbers like these could be more than enough reason to want to throw in the towel before even beginning down the entrepreneurial path.  But don’t give up just yet.  While there are certainly no guarantees of success, planning for likely difficulties can considerably lessen your chances of bec
